The Tour de France is the most prominent cycling race in the world. It’s now in its 109th edition and it’s being called the ‘Highest in History’ because there are more climbs than ever before. This is important because the climbs are where the race is won and lost. The best riders rely on their teammates to get them through the long, flat, and hilly stages, before they take on the mountain stages on their own. These are the hardest and most brutal stages of the race - but they are exactly what makes the Tour de France famous.

Clarification: In our discussion of the 2010 race, our video neglected to mention that Alberto Contador was later stripped of the title because he had tested positive for using a performance-enhancing drug.

Let's not forget the power of the TT and sometimes TTT. They really expose the riders and teams, except for this year, as there weren''t too many time-trials and didn't really play a huge role in Bernal's win, unlike 2011 when Cadel basically won his Tour in the TT against Schleck.

They should drop the time trial on some tours to give climbers a better chance

    • John Davis
      John Davis 9 दिन पहले

@Clive Ellis Quintana completed the time trial just 15 seconds slower than Egon Bernal this year. That's nothing over a three week race. The reason Quintana didn't win wasn't the time trial. I agree that the time trials shouldn't dominate the Tour but they didn't this year.

    • Clive Ellis
      Clive Ellis 9 दिन पहले

@John Davis Pantani years ago got a 6 minute lead, lost nearly 4 minutes in the time trial but won. Nairo Quintana might win
if the time trial is dropped.

    • John Davis
      John Davis 9 दिन पहले

The General Classification is always won by great climbers, at least in recent years. Egon Bernal lost over a minute in the individual time trial and still won GC.

For reference, at the ideal position in a peloton wind resistance was is reduced by 95% according to some wind tunnel studies. Wind resistance isn’t everything of course, and when you’re only getting 5% of the leader’s wind, the previously negligible inefficiencies such as rolling resistance become more apparent.
